Your feet take you wandering towards the edge of a deep forest. You naturally seek a less open area as the sun climbs to the sky. By the time you've reached a large outcrop of rock that begins the foothills to the mountain in the distance you are quite worn and overheated. Too tired to cross the rest of the expansive meadow (more of a large plain, really) you decide to seek respite from the outcrop instead. To your immense relief, there is a dark cave from which cool air emits. Gratefully, you walk in and settle yourself upon the sandy floor. Unfortunately your rest is not destined to be because someone else is sharing this conveniently placed cave.
It seems impossible but suddenly you feel as if you are almost too cold. You shudder, noting with astonishment that the air has suddenly grown so cold that it seems to bite at you like a knife. This sudden drop in temperature is the only warning you receive.

He simply appears, taking shape out of the dark recesses of the cave. You stumble back, taken completely by surprise, and fall on your rear. He is thin, built not quite like any other equine you have ever seen. His hide, a black that lacks all luster, is broken by jagged markings that shine an eerie crimson like freshly cut wounds. His face is a sickly white with eyes so dark that they seem to peer at you from deeply set caverns in his face. Around his neck dangles a pendent in the shape of a tiny skull and crossbones. Not all all cheery. And he's cold, so cold!
As he takes another deliberate step towards you the mixture of frigid temperature and plain fright causes you to utter a short, sharp cry of fear. To your astonishment, he halts at the sound of your voice..and smiles. This is no improvement upon his physical appearance for now his face only appears to be a grinning skull, gaping at you with terribly empty eyes. You begin to shiver uncontrollably.
"I apologize," You are a bit too preoccupied with your fear to really be amazed that the unicorn can speak. His voice is cold, mid-toned, and carries a strange exotic accent. "I must have scared you....half to death." He chuckles and the sound is not at all pleasing.
You scoot back, wildly muttering half formed apologies.
"Oh, no need to apologize. I like to share," He assures you, moving towards you as you move away. "I have no objections to you staying here awhile. Or even a little longer than a while, forever, perhaps." The malicious humor is apparent and yet his face remains completely devoid of emotion. His eyes, though, glint darkly with concealed amusement. You don't wait to hear anymore but instead shoot out of the cave like a mad jack in the box. As you flee in the bright sunlight the sound of cold, cold laughter follows you, chilling you to the bone even in the light of the noon day sun.
